Key insights

  • AI is reshaping investor relations: data analytics and AI tools are becoming core skills for modern IR teams
  • Communication skills alone aren’t enough: employers want professionals who understand capital markets, finance and risk
  • IPO and M&A experience still stands out: transaction exposure remains a key differentiator for senior hires
  • Hiring is becoming more evidence-based: candidates need to demonstrate impact, not just responsibilities
  • IR careers are becoming more strategic: success increasingly depends on combining financial insight, investor engagement and corporate storytelling

Investor relations recruitment and corporate communications recruitment in UK financial services now sit at the heart of how organisations engage with capital markets, explain sustainability and risk management and navigate economic uncertainty.

IR teams are expected to:

  • Lead investor engagement with institutional investors and the sell‑side
  • Manage regulatory requirements
  • Bring corporate strategy to life through clear corporate storytelling across digital channels

Within that context, there are four trends shaping careers for investor relations managers, IROs and corporate communications specialists.

AI and data analytics are changing what investor relations teams can see and do. Rather than relying only on manual tracking and anecdotal feedback, IR teams can now analyse patterns in trading, liquidity and investor behaviour more quickly and in greater depth.

In practice, this often means:

  • Using data analytics to understand how different institutional investors respond to announcements
  • Summarising earnings calls and clustering investor questions with the help of AI tools
  • Drafting first versions of press releases, Q&A documents and investor updates via AI then refining them

Done well, this frees IR professionals to focus on higher value work such as shaping investor relations strategy, planning roadshows and advising leadership on market sentiment and risk management.

For careers, the implication is clear. Investor relations professionals who are comfortable with data analytics and AI‑enabled tools and who can still apply good judgement in a regulated environment are increasingly attractive to UK financial services employers.

Investor relations and corporate communications roles in UK financial services are more commercial and technical than ever. Strong communication remains important but isn’t enough on its own.

On the IR side, teams are expected to:

  • Interpret financial analysis, valuation and liquidity metrics not just repeat results
  • Link investor engagement activities to long‑term corporate strategy
  • Hold confident conversations with institutional investors and the sell‑side about performance, risk and sustainability

Corporate communications teams face similar expectations. They must explain complex regulatory requirements clearly, integrate sustainability and long‑term value themes into corporate storytelling and keep internal and external audiences aligned when strategy changes.

The professionals in highest demand are those who can sit comfortably alongside the CFO and senior leaders, translate detailed financial and regulatory issues into clear messages and influence decisions rather than simply communicate them.

For many organisations in financial services, the ideal hire is someone who blends strong communication skills with a genuine understanding of capital markets and risk management.

Even in a shifting IPO market, transaction experience remains a major differentiator for IR and comms professionals in financial services.

Capital markets events put investor relations and corporate communications under intense pressure and organisations value people who have managed that pressure before.

Experience that stands out includes:

  • Supporting an IPO or significant capital raise from equity story development and investor relations strategy to roadshows and investor targeting
  • Handling messaging around M&A, disposals or restructuring where investor engagement and internal communication both matter
  • Managing earnings calls, press releases and wider communication in periods of heightened scrutiny

Professionals who can point to specific situations where their work helped maintain market confidence, clarify strategic direction or support successful execution have a clear edge.

For senior IR and corporate communications roles, exposure to the IPO market or complex M&A is often treated as a strong positive even when deal activity is cyclical.

Hiring processes for investor relations and corporate communications roles in UK financial services are becoming more selective and focused on impact. Organisations are clearer about what they expect from IR and comms in terms of investor engagement, liquidity and market perception.

Common themes in current hiring briefs include:

  • Direct experience building relationships with institutional investors and analysts
  • Comfort balancing regulatory requirements with transparent communication, particularly around sustainability and risk
  • A track record of improving investor understanding of the business model and long‑term corporate strategy

Assessment is shifting too. Case studies based on earnings calls, press releases, roadshows or regulatory events are increasingly used to test how candidates think, structure messages and respond to challenging questions.

Hiring managers want tangible examples such as how a candidate shaped investor relations strategy, supported roadshows during uncertain conditions or helped reposition narrative around risk management or sustainability.

Generic claims about relationship building are less persuasive than clear outcomes such as better-quality investor questions, more consistent sell‑side coverage or reduced volatility around announcements.

For investor relations and corporate communications professionals in UK financial services, these trends point to a more strategic and demanding future.

Roles now combine investor engagement, financial analysis, risk management and corporate storytelling with AI and data analytics increasingly embedded in day‑to‑day work.

Professionals best placed to progress are likely to be those who can:

  • Use data and digital channels to deepen insight into capital markets and investor behaviour
  • Integrate sustainability and long‑term strategy credibly into their narratives
  • Demonstrate impact across earnings calls, press releases, roadshows and wider investor relations activity

Frequently asked questions

This section provides clear, concise answers to the most common queries on the trends shaping the investor relations and communications job market

What does an investor relations team do in a financial services firm?

In a financial services firm, investor relations teams manage the relationship between the organisation and the investment community.

They explain financial performance, risk management and corporate strategy to institutional investors and analysts and then bring market feedback and sentiment back into internal discussions to support better‑informed decisions.

Which skills matter most for IR and corporate communications careers?

The skills that matter most for IR and corporate communications careers combine clear, confident communication with solid financial understanding and commercial awareness.

These professionals are comfortable with data and capital markets, can interpret numbers and regulatory information and are able to turn complex detail into simple, tailored messages for different stakeholders such as investors, media and employees.

How is sustainability changing IR and comms in financial services?

Sustainability and wider ESG topics have moved to the centre of investor conversations rather than sitting on the side.

IR and comms teams now need to show how environmental and social issues link to risk management, regulation and long‑term value creation. That means building ESG into the core narrative, not treating it as a separate add‑on.

Is investor relations a good longterm career path in financial services?

Yes. Investor relations offers a mix of finance, communication and strategy, with strong exposure to senior leaders and capital markets.

Over time it can lead to senior IRO or Head of IR roles and, for some professionals, broader leadership positions that span IR, corporate communications and corporate strategy. It suits people who enjoy both numbers and narrative.
