From New Zealand to London: embracing change

I recently moved to London in August from New Zealand and I’m loving the fast-paced nature of the city. It’s such a change from what I’m used to, but I’ve embraced the opportunity to explore Europe. Edinburgh in Scotland has been a highlight so far and I’m excited about the year ahead, full of even more travel with friends from home.

Discovering recruitment: I am a people person

My journey into recruitment wasn’t exactly linear. I started out thinking I would study in a medical field but quickly realised I was too squeamish for that path. I shifted to studying accounting and HR, but numbers weren’t for me either – I’m much more of a people person

While still at university, I used the HR side of my degree to gain some experience, starting in an HR coordinator role at Platform 4 Group. From there, I transitioned to an agency and discovered my passion for recruitment. It’s fast-paced and exciting with opportunities to partner with big brands, which I loved.

Joining Carter Murray from across the world

When I decided to move to London towards the end of 2023, I knew I wanted to stay in recruitment and focus on marketing and business development within professional services. I discovered Carter Murray through a rec-to-rec and was drawn to their consultative approach.

I went through three virtual interviews before joining and I didn’t even see the office until my first day! Learning about the company remotely and joining a team from halfway around the world was an exciting experience.

I genuinely adore my team. The management has been incredibly supportive, helping me not just with professional growth but also with settling into London.

We have a collaborative and approachable culture. Coming into the office is a joy because we all get along so well. I feel lucky to have chosen Carter Murray – I can’t imagine having this same experience anywhere else.

Making an impact: first placements and client praise

One of my proudest moments so far has been my first placement. The client gave me a fantastic testimonial and I even received a LinkedIn recommendation from another client shortly after. These moments mean a lot to me and validate my decision to join this market.

it’s also important to treat people with kindness and empathy.

Advice for new recruiters: patience and kindness go a long way

Resilience is key in recruitment. You need to put yourself out there and give it your best shot, but it’s also important to treat people with kindness and empathy.

Job searching is a tough time for many people and patience goes a long way. The effort you put in pays off when you make a placement or build a lasting connection. It’s all worth it.
