individuals who work in marketing and business development within professional services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s designed to give back to the industry that\u2019s shaped us while building a stronger, more connected professional network and supporting career development across the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We sat down with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/gemmafrancisbdconsulting\/?\">Gemma Francis<\/a>, one of our mentors, to learn about her experience within the programme and the benefits of class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gemma is the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/gemmafrancisconsulting.com\/\">Gemma Francis Consulting<\/a>, a specialist BD consultancy for law firms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She brings genuine insider knowledge to everything she does thanks to her experience as a former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legal500.com\/\">Legal 500 researcher<\/a> and within in-house BD roles across UK and European law firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through GFC, she has helped lawyers at every level build BD habits that actually stick &#8211; working on the mindset and beliefs that determine whether BD happens at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gemma believes the problem with BD in professional services is almost never skill. It&#8217;s everything upstream of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-brand-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-large-font-size wp-elements-b05955c21aba5d0fa0b863d0b434655e\" id=\"h-what-motivated-you-to-join-our-mentorship-programme-and-support-bd-professionals-in-professional-services\">What motivated you to join our mentorship programme and support BD professionals in professional services?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, it comes down to two things: giving back, and watching people flourish. I remember very clearly what it felt like starting out in-house. It\u2019s an overwhelming experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019re pulled in every direction, surrounded by people of enormous intellect, power and drive &#8211; and it can be genuinely nerve-wracking. I wish I\u2019d had more structured support at that stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joining this programme is my way of offering that to someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-brand-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-large-font-size wp-elements-bceea775ee68dc0c531e99d0a2ecfef5\" id=\"h-how-has-mentorship-played-a-role-in-your-own-career-journey-and-progression\">How has mentorship played a role in your own career journey and progression?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s been a genuinely important factor in my success. Having someone I could bounce ideas off &#8211; someone who wasn\u2019t my direct line manager, but who had been in my situation and dealt with the same pressures &#8211; gave me a safe space to be honest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I could say things I wouldn\u2019t feel comfortable saying to a manager and get the kind of support I actually needed rather than the kind I thought I should be asking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the practical value, mentorship has also given me some of my longest-lasting professional friendships. That\u2019s something I hadn\u2019t expected, and it\u2019s been one of the most rewarding parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-brand-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-large-font-size wp-elements-accf70f26abd2c627b5448bc2f3482a0\" id=\"h-what-do-you-think-makes-a-successful-mentor-mentee-relationship-in-the-professional-services-sector\">What do you think makes a successful mentor-mentee relationship in the professional services sector?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honesty, experience and a genuine willingness to learn on both sides. That last point matters more than people realise. A good mentoring relationship isn\u2019t simply a mentor imparting knowledge to a mentee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best ones I\u2019ve seen and experienced are genuinely two-way: the mentor brings perspective and experience, but they\u2019re also learning from the mentee &#8211; their energy, their questions, the way they see things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In professional services specifically, I\u2019d add trust and psychological safety to that list. The mentee needs to feel they can be honest without it affecting how they\u2019re perceived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-brand-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-large-font-size wp-elements-b845abc14e38d078cefe93eabeb1009f\" id=\"h-what-skills-and-insights-have-you-given-to-your-mentee-during-the-programme\">What skills and insights have you given to your mentee during the programme?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resilience and perspective sit at the top of the list. When you\u2019re inside a law firm and everything is moving at pace, it\u2019s easy to feel like you\u2019re sinking (or worse, that you\u2019re failing) when actually you\u2019re already doing a great job. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the most valuable thing someone can do is remind you of the importance of your role, and equally, that you are not your job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the skills side, I approach business development slightly differently now than I did when I was in-house because I\u2019ve since built my own business. I\u2019ve experienced what it actually means to sell for yourself: building a pipeline, converting relationships, making it sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m genuinely excited that I get to share that knowledge and perspective with my mentee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-brand-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-large-font-size wp-elements-7ac7dad6c490b5a38312646432642efd\" id=\"h-how-do-you-approach-supporting-someone-who-may-be-facing-uncertainty-or-challenges-in-their-career\">How do you approach supporting someone who may be facing uncertainty or challenges in their career?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honestly, it depends on the person &#8211; and that\u2019s something I\u2019ve learned through working with my one-to-one clients. Everyone needs something slightly different depending on what they\u2019re facing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the starting point is always the same: creating a space where they feel completely safe to be themselves and honest about where they actually are. No performance, no polish. Just honesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From there, my role is to offer guidance and support that helps them work through it &#8211; not by imposing my own experience on them, but by holding space for them to reach their own clarity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answers are usually already there; sometimes people just need the right environment to find them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-brand-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-large-font-size wp-elements-ddf067e4a667d205757ae3b31594f221\" id=\"h-what-advice-would-you-give-to-someone-considering-becoming-a-mentor\">What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a mentor?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have the time for it, do it. It\u2019s genuinely one of the most rewarding things you can do professionally. But go in with an open mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn\u2019t simply about transferring your knowledge to someone else. You will almost certainly learn something too, and often from unexpected places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second thing I\u2019d say is: let your mentee lead. There will be moments where it\u2019s right for you to steer the conversation, but predominantly the ball should be in their court. It\u2019s their space to bring the topics, the questions and the challenges they\u2019re facing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your job is to show up, listen well, and help them think &#8211; not to fill the silence with your own agenda.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column single-post__columns__column--related is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"
