An Education in Repurposing Food at Cooking for a Cause with OzHarvest

On Thursday 10th November, Carter Murray, part of The SR Group, ran its fifth Cooking for a Cause event with OzHarvest. Over the course of the night employees and their valued clients worked with professional chefs to repurpose rescued food which was delivered the next day to the One1Seven Church in Redfern who provide hampers and weekly dinners to disadvantaged people in the area.

Establishing the importance of the night and the charity was first on the menu with an address by CEO and Founder of OzHarvest, Ronni Kahn alongside Head of the SR Group Australia, Mark Pryor. Australia produces enough food to feed approximately 60 million people each year, yet two million people still rely on food relief. OzHarvest is an essential component of ensuring that unused food makes its way to people who need it the most.

After an uplifting speech, teams were led away to work under talented chefs in order to prepare a selection of dishes. Some of the items on the menu included pork curry and roti, beef kofta with apple cous cous, and cannelloni from scratch.

A bustling hour followed with proud employees and clients coming together to create restaurant quality dishes that would go on to feed vulnerable Australians in our community. After the dishes were prepared the group gathered together again to admire and sample each other’s new found culinary skills over a glass of wine.

The importance of the night was not lost amongst the fun with parting words from James, one of the head chefs. A round of applause was shared for the true heroes of the night, the team of volunteers and chefs who gave their time to this great cause and without whom the night wouldn’t be possible.

Clients came from a variety of companies including KPMG, David Jones, Sydney Festival, Staples, and Frasers to name a few.
