Carter Murray interviews Zelinda Bennett, International Marketing and Business Development Director at DLA Piper.
What do you think will be the biggest challenge for the generation of women behind you in the workplace?
I really don't know whether we can have it all - we have to be realistic. Is it possible to have a career, a family (if you want one) and work life balance? I've been able to build a successful career because I have been fortunate enough to work for a forward thinking firm and have a boss who lets me work flexibly. As long as I deliver, he doesn't care where I am or what hours I'm working. I'm also fortunate enough to have a husband who has been happy to take the brunt of the childcare and domestic duties. Lastly, I work in an industry that pays well so I have been able to afford the domestic support I need.
How do you achieve work life balance?
With difficulty. I tend to get obsessed with work and need to remind myself that my job doesn't define me. It's important to completely switch off from work and set aside time for family and leisure. I'm no sportswoman but I run at least 3 times a week. It keeps me sane. I'm a big art lover and drag the husband and kids around galleries at the weekend. I also love live bands! But there's no getting around the fact that if you want to be successful you've got to work hard.
What were the main drivers in helping you succeed in your career?
It's always been important to me to do the things I love doing. Also, it's not about the money, it's about being valued.
