Carter Murray is proud to be supporting International Women's Day 2017. We have interviewed a series of our female clients asking them how they have been bold for change #BeBoldForChange.
Carter Murray interviews Mary-Anne Anderson, Head of Marketing and Business Development at Slaughter and May.
Do you have any secrets to having a successful career?
There are no real secrets to success, all it takes is a grit, guts and grace. Easy, right?
What do you think is the most significant barrier to female leadership?
There are quite a few barriers to female leadership, some are societal and some are based on corporate structure and policies. The one we can all overcome is ‘Imposter syndrome’, it’s a killer.
What advice would you give aspiring women in your industry?
Work hard, believe in yourself and make sure you network with people all the way through your career. The world of professional services BD is small and you will be better off if you have a good support network and mentors around you of like-minded successful professionals.
How do you achieve work life balance?
Planning and stick to the plan. If the plan is to go to the gym, then that’s the plan. If the plan is to spend the evening crunching numbers on spreadsheets, then that’s the plan.
What were the main drivers in helping you succeed in your career?
If you had told me 20 years ago I’d be in the position I’m in now, I would never have believed you. I believe that it’s all about being ‘micro-ambitious’. I don’t think you need to know what you 'want to be when you’re grown up’, you just need to take the first step in a direction you are passionate about and then, at the right time, stretch yourself, take the next step and keep going!
